Cape Wrath Overview
Cape Wrath, which is known by the name of Meadowlands in the United States, is a television series filmed in Britain and produced by the British film and television company Ecosse Films. The series premiered in the United Kingdom on July 10, 2007 ad is shown on BST on Channel 4. In the United States, the show launched on June 17, 2007 and is broadcast on Showtime.
The show’s interior shots are filmed at The Maidstone Studios, which is located at Vinters Park in Maidstone, Kent UK. The outdoor set, however, is the Leybourne Lakes Country Park and The Lakes housing estate located within the park.
The basic plot of the drama revolves around the Brogan family, which is attempting to leave its negative past behind while moving forward toward a shaky and uncertain future. While the family appears to move to a suburbanite’s utopia after being relocated by the witness protection program, the picturesque setting paints an interesting juxtaposition to the troubled life the family still leads.
It doesn’t take long for the Brogan family to realize that the peaceful and crime free setting they have moved to still is not enough to help them escape from their past. As the family slips deeper into paranoia, the surprises continue to catch the family off guard.
Aside from the Brogan family, other key characters of the show include Brenda , Jack, and Bernard. Brenda, who is both high strung and bubbly, is a neighbor to the family who speaks almost nonstop about how beautiful she thinks her daughter is. Jack, on the other hand, is a handyman that purposely tries to intimidate those around him and seems to enjoy their fear. Bernard is the local police detective that works diligently to make sure the residents of Meadowlands remain lawful – no matter what it takes.
The Brogan family is a bit quirky as well. The mother, Evelyn, maintains a melancholy demeanor. Her daughter, Zoe, behaves in an almost predatory manner while her son, Mark, refuses to speak. The Brogan’s aren’t the only ones in the neighborhood with something to hide, however, and over time all of their secrets will be sure to resurface.
The Cape Wrath series has managed to build the intrigue and interest surrounding the show by launching an innovative website feature. After each episode is aired, information regarding a select character’s life before having moved to the Meadowlands neighborhood. Here, viewers can learn a bit about the character’s deep, dark secrets and the reasons behind their being placed in the witness relocation program. When visiting the site, those characters that have not yet been revealed display an “Access Denied” message when attempting to read the bio.
Whether or not more in-depth information has been revealed on the site, site visitors can still read a brief summary of that character’s personality and motivation. Brenda’s daughter, Jezebel, for example, is shown to be a shallow body fascist that hates “ugly” people despite the fact that she herself weighs over 200 pounds.
